Major increases in Petrol and diesel prices recorded, across major cities of the country

New Delhi: On Thursday (April 25), Petrol, diesel prices were hiked after a four-day hiatus. Petrol prices increased by 7-9 paise per litre while diesel became costlier by 8-10 paise across major cities of the country In national capital Delhi, petrol increased by 7 paise per litre to Rs 73.02 as against Rs 72.95 on Wednesday while diesel became costlier by 8 paise to Rs 66.54 a litre. The retail fuel prices in Delhi are the cheapest among all metros and most state capitals due to lower taxes. In Mumbai, citizens have to pay Rs 78.59 for a litre of petrol, 7 paise more than Wednesday's price while diesel costs Rs 69.65 per litre, 9 paise more than yesterday, as per data available with Indian Oil Corp website.  Similarly, in Chennai, petrol and diesel are selling for Rs 75.79 a litre and Rs 70.26 per litre, 8 paise and 9 paise more than yesterday’s prices respectively.

In metro cities,people in Kolkata have to shell out Rs 75.04 for a litre of petrol while diesel retailed at Rs 68.28 per litre as against Rs Rs 74.97 for petrol and Rs 68.28 for diesel yesterday. In Noida, petrol price increased by 5 paise to Rs 72.32 as against Rs 72.27 on Wednesday and diesel was retailing at Rs 65.60, 7 paise more than yesterday's price. In Gurugram, petrol, diesel prices increased by 5 paise and 7 paise respectively to Rs 72.86 and Rs 65.70 respectively.

Here it is worth mentioning here is that the price of petrol and diesel prices in the country is dependent on the global crude prices and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate as India imports 80 per cent of its crude requirements. On Thursday, the rupee was trading at 70.04 against the US dollar, down 16 paise as compared to Wednesday's closing price. Meanwhile, Oil prices dipped on Thursday as record US output and rising crude stockpiles dampened the impact on markets of tighter US sanctions on Iran and producer club OPEC's continued curbs on supply. Brent crude futures were at $74.53 per barrel as of 8.45 am in Asian trade, down 4 cents from their last close.
