It holds immense spiritual and seasonal significance, as it denotes a shift from the Southern Hemisphere (Dakshinayan) to the Northern Hemisphere (Uttarayan). This transition is associated with positive energy, renewal, and hope.

How to Worship the Sun God on Makar Sankranti

Devotees follow a specific ritual (puja vidhi) to honor the Sun God on this sacred day:

  • Morning Bath: Begin the day by bathing in a holy river during the auspicious time. If visiting a river is not possible, take a bath at home while chanting bathing mantras.
  • Offering Arghya: Use a copper vessel to offer pure water mixed with vermillion and red flowers to the rising Sun. Chant the mantra "Om Suryaya Namah" while doing so.
  • Prayers and Aarti: Bow before the Sun God and pray for happiness and prosperity. Ensure that the offered water does not fall on your feet. Conclude the ritual by performing aarti.
  • Donations: Donate clothes, food, and grains to the needy after completing the puja. Such acts are believed to amplify the blessings received on this auspicious day.
