Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed ut home secretary RK Goyal to identify and make a list of illegal migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh. The high court said that the list has to be prepared in six weeks. A bench of Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi passed the order on Wednesday (April 6, 2022) while hearing a PIL filed by advocate Hunar Gupta.

Hunar Gupta, in his petition, had sought identification of all illegal migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh who have come from there and started living in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The PIL also sought a direction to shift all illegal migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to any other place. Hunar Gupta has argued that the Jammu and Kashmir government has not set up any refugee camp for them nor did the United Nations (UN) announce to set up any camp for them in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the same time, the petitioner has demanded that all the benefits given to bangladeshi and illegal migrants from Myanmar from the government treasury be withdrawn and the scheme and benefits be given back to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. Advocate Gupta said that the migrants were taking advantage of the government's help under the schemes formulated for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The petition also pointed to the sudden increase in the number of illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar in Jammu and Kashmir. According to government data, 13,400 Myanmar and Bangladeshi illegal immigrants are living in different areas of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the actual  figures are much higher than that.
