New Delhi: A Malayali student allegedly hanged himself at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here on Friday. . He allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan inside the campus, a police officer said. The incident was reported to police at 12 p.m. after the deceased, Rishi Joshua Thomas, sent his suicide note to the professor of the English department

"The professor immediately informed the in-charge of Mahi Mandvi hostel to check on him. Thomas stayed in Mahi Mandvi hostel in JNU campus," DCP Devender Arya said.

Thomas was later found hanging in a room located in the basement of the library, he said. A student of M.A. second year of English language, Thomas was first seen by a boy who peeped in from a window and found him hanging from the fan.

"The door was forced open and the body was taken down by cutting the cable. A JNU doctor checked and declared him dead. The body has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. Relatives were informed and Thomas' cousin Mathew Vargese also reached JNU," the officer added.

It is said that Rishi was suffering from depression for a long time. He had not attended the final semester examination that was held on Tuesday. Rishi’s family had been staying in Vellur in Tamil Nadu for the past several years. "The deceased was undergoing some treatment. As per preliminary enquiry, no foul play is suspected. Further investigation is underway," he added.

The JNU in the press statement said that they express its deep condolences at the untimely demise of an MA student in one of the academic buildings of the university. "Relatives informed one cousin brother Mathew Varghese also reached JNU. One suicide note mailed to Prof of English language. As per preliminary inquiry, no foul play is suspected. Further investigation is in progress," police said.
