Malaysia Declines Offer to Host 2026 Commonwealth Games, Citing Cost Concerns

Malaysia has decided against hosting the upcoming Commonwealth Games due to worries about the event's expenses. The Ministry of Youth and Sports announced on Friday that they had declined the offer to host the games after determining that the supporting funds of 100 million pounds ($126.21 million) offered by the Commonwealth Games Federation would not be sufficient to cover all the expenses.

In a statement, the ministry mentioned, "Additionally, we couldn't gauge the economic impact within the limited time frame." The decision came after Malaysia was approached to step in as the host following the withdrawal of Victoria, Australia, last year. Victoria had pulled out citing a significant increase in the estimated cost, which had risen to 6.9 billion Australian dollars ($4.5 billion).

A recent report from Victoria's Auditor-General's Office, released on Wednesday, revealed that the initial cost estimate leading to the cancellation of the event was "exaggerated and lacked transparency."

Malaysia's decision not to host the games underscores the importance of financial considerations in such large-scale sporting events.
