The President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizz, has reportedly called upon the Indian government to remove its military presence from the country to safeguard its democratic principles. Muizz expressed concern that India's continued military presence could undermine the democratic will of the Maldivian people and pose a threat to the nation's democratic future.
"The people of Maldives strongly oppose the idea of having foreign military personnel stationed in our country. Presently, India maintains such a presence in Maldives," stated Muizz, emphasizing that neglecting the desires of the majority could endanger the country's democratic stability.
Muizz highlighted that having foreign military personnel without parliamentary consent contradicts the country's constitution both in letter and in spirit. He expressed optimism that a resolution could be reached through dialogue, underscoring the historical ties and growing relations in trade, commerce, investment, and tourism between India and Maldives.
Reiterating the strong bilateral relationship, the Maldivan President supported defense cooperation, particularly in fortifying the Maldives National Defence Force. "Our nations have a long history of cooperation, especially in maritime defense. We believe India's association with us is rooted in mutual principles," Muizz emphasized.
Additionally, President Muizz clarified the status of the hydrographic survey agreement with the Indian Navy, stating that Maldives would not be renewing it as the country possesses its own national hydrography agency. However, he indicated openness to seeking support from 'external partners' if necessary.
