The month of Sawan is special, worshipping Shiva in this month brings great benefits. Today we are going to tell you the story of Shri Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga. Shri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is situated on the Shail mountain on the banks of Krishna river in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is also called Kailash of the South.

Story - This story is mentioned in the 15th chapter of Kotirudra Samhita in Shiva Purana. Once Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided that she would choose the right bride for her sons. Now it was debated who would get married first. Lord Shiva suggested that whoever takes the first round of the whole world, will get married first. Hearing this, Karthikeya first started revolving around the earth, but Ganesh Ji, because of being obese and his vehicle is a rat, how did he revolve around the earth so quickly. Ganesh Ji was definitely fat but he had intelligence.

He gave some thought and requested his parents to sit in one place and then revolved around the parents seven times. In this way, by orbiting the parents, he became entitled to receive the fruits of the earth's orbit. And he won the bet.  Goddess Parvati and Shiva were very happy to see this. Ganesha was married with Riddhi and Siddhi.

Later, when Karthikeya returned, he was very sad because Ganesha got married. Karthikeya touched the feet of the parents and left. Sadly, he went to Mount Crounch. When Goddess Parvati and Shiva came to know about this, they sent Narada to convince Karthikeya and bring him back home. Narada Ji reached the mountain and tried hard to convince Kartikeya. But Karthikeya did not agree and Narada got disappointed and reached to Parvati and Shiva and narrated the whole story.

She was saddened to hear this, she herself reached Mount Crouch with Shiva. On discovering the arrival of the parents, Karthikeya had already gone 12 km away. Then Shiva appeared as Jyotirlinga there. Since then, that place became famous as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. It is said that in the son's affection, Parvati comes here on every full moon and Lord Shiva every Amavasya and it is also said that this is the place where Sati's cervix fell. That is why it is also called Bhramramba Shaktipeeth. This rock is also known as Shaktipeeth. Ashtabula statue is installed in the temple as Mahalakshmi.

Another story - This story is written on the walls of Mallikarjuna. It was the capital of a king named Chandragupta near Mount Crounch. The king's daughter Chandravati was caught in some crisis. The girl left the palace and went to the mountain to solve the problem. She started living on the mountain. She had a very beautiful black coloured cow. The girl loved her cow very much. But every day some person used to take out the milk of that cow. That girl could not understand who is doing this.

One day the girl herself saw a thief milking the Shyama cow with her own eyes. The girl got very angry and with anger, she approached the thief. But there was no thief there. She was surprised because she saw a Shivling there. She was very happy to see Shivling and she built a temple in the same place. The Shivalinga temple later became famous as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga.
