Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has filed her nomination from the Nandigram seat today. In this seat of Nandigram, Mamata Banerjee is pitted against her former close aide and now BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. Mamata Banerjee offered prayers at the Shiva temple in Nandigram before filing nomination papers. After this, the nomination was filed in the SDO office of Haldia. She will now return to Nandigram and return to Kolkata tomorrow.
Nandigram is considered to be the stronghold of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari, who was elected from this seat in 2016 and became a minister in Mamata Banerjee's cabinet. The officers joined the saffron brigade in December last year. The rebel Trinamool leader had earlier claimed that he would beat Banerjee by more than 50,000 votes.
The BJP on Saturday released the first list of 57 candidates for the first two phases of the West Bengal assembly elections. It has fielded Suvendu Adhikari against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram's seat. For the 294-member assembly in West Bengal, voting will be held in eight phases between March 27 and April 29. Vote counting will take place on May 2.
