Even though the 2024 general elections are still a few years away, the rumblings in the Opposition appear to have already begun. The All India Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, appears to be on a hiring frenzy. The TMC's bench strength has recently been bolstered by the accession of former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro, powerful politicians from Haryana, and sitting MLAs from Meghalaya. Mamata Banerjee met with important non-Congress opposition leaders before the winter session began. She even made a joke on Rahul Gandhi's foreign trips without naming him by name. Prashant Kishore responded with a tweet disputing the Gandhi family's so-called "right" to be the party's face. The national political landscape has shifted as a result of these recent events.

Congress has a loyal vote share of roughly 20% even at its lowest point. Others in the Opposition camp, on the other hand, have vote share in the single digits. Even if you tally up everyone's vote share or look at the overall number of seats, it's still far less than Congress. Even Mamata Banerjee, who is challenging the party, recognises that no one other than the Congress can now form a coalition that can keep the BJP at away. This might explain Congress' hubris and tendency to take everything for granted. Rather than functioning as a glue that holds parties together, the Opposition's cohesiveness is eroding, taking Congress's vote share with it.

When the Congress took on the Bharatiya Janata Party head-on, it lost about 96% of its seats. The loyal voting base of the Congress is increasingly migrating to the non-BJP option open to them, according to recent statistics. The fact that people are jumping ship indicates that the ship is sinking. This appears to be the situation with the Congress party at the moment. Leaders are disillusioned and have major questions about the direction of the party, and it is possible that they may abandon it.

Democracy is all about choices, therefore either you or someone else will be the one. If Congress fails to make the necessary course corrections, its devoted voter base will transform, finally devouring the party. The gap that Congress has left is being filled by people like Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal catapulting themselves to the national scene and their party making inroads into other regions of the country. This is simply the start of Congress's transformation, and it might be the start of the end.

Mamata Banerjee has given Congress leadership a wake-up call. It is now up to them to decide whether to snooze or turn off the alarm.
