Kolkata: The Modi government of the Center is going to put the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Parliament on Monday. It is being fiercely opposed all over the country, especially in the northeast states and West Bengal. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also been opposing it for a long time.

Due to this, recently TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said that CAB and National Citizenship Registration (NRC) are two sides of the same coin. This bill is against the basic principles of the Constitution. She said, "I will oppose it till my last breath." Fearing NRC, at least 30 people have committed suicide in the state. On the other hand, TMC leader Derek O'Brien has said that the party has issued a whip to all its MPs to be present in the house for 4 days from Monday, considering the possibility of CAB being introduced.

Central Government can present the CAB in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The bill provides for citizenship of non-Muslims who came to India due to persecution on the basis of religion from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan. Considering the law, the amended law will not be effective in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
