Kolkata: PM Narendra Modi and state chief minister Mamata Banerjee have once again been stunned by the floods in West Bengal. In fact, Mamata Banerjee has complained to PM Modi over the phone that the floods in West Bengal are 'man made' and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is responsible for this. Mamata has told PM Modi that the silt of the river is not being cleaned by the DVC and more water is being released than necessary.
In fact, Mamata Banerjee received a call from PM Modi while she was travelling by car to visit flood-affected areas at Amta and Udaynarayanpur in Howrah. Over the phone, PM Modi asked Mamata if it was raining heavily in her state. Mamata then placed her complaint before PM Modi. CM Mamata said the man-made flood has occurred in Bengal due to the release of water not due to rain but by the central government's DVC. CM Mamata also said that the DVC had asked for the release of 54,000 cusecs of water, while 20,000 cusecs of water have been released so far, which has flooded several areas of Howrah, Hooghly and Midnapore. This is not the first time Mamata has blamed the central government for the Bengal floods.
Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is an Indian government organization operating in the Damodar river region of West Bengal and the states of Jharkhand. There have been allegations between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP over the alleged release of excess water by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) dam.
