Kolkata: The political rhetoric that started over the Hathras issue. The opposition is targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government has also been attacked by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. Questions have been raised about why PM Narendra Modi is silent on the matter so far and why he is not speaking for Dalits.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said on the Hathras case that BJP is silent on the issue, while such cases question women safety in the country. Mamata Banerjee also took to her Twitter to discuss the case, saying that what happened to the young Dalit girl in Hathras was reprehensible. The forced funeral of the girl, doing this without asking the family, reflects the shame and the truth of those who were shouting women's safety slogans during the election.
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has talked about the gang-rape in Hathras. TMC leader Derek O'Brien also hit out at the BJP government by putting up a video on social media. He said that "They talk about Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao', but on the other hand, every fifteen minutes a girl is being raped in India".
