Kolkata: Preparations for Durga Puja across the country are now in their final stages. Durga Puja starts along with Mahalaya. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate Durga Puja pandals with 'Chakshu Dan' (Chakshu Dan) of Mother Durga. Mamata Banerjee will release the festive issue of Trinamool Congress (TMC) mouthpiece Jago Bangla at Nazrul Manch at 3 pm on Mahalaya.

She will then donate the eye at 5 p.m. at Chetna Agrani Sarvajanin Puja committee and Jodhpur park 95. Durga Puja is celebrated in a grand manner in West Bengal. Mahalaya has its own special significance before Durga Puja. People celebrate this day in a special way in Bengal. Mahalaya is of great importance in Hinduism. It is celebrated on the day of Amavasya, which is also the last day of Pitru Paksha.

According to Hindu scriptures, Mahalaya and Pitru Paksha Amavasya are celebrated on the same day. This year Amavasya is coming on October 6. It is on the day of Mahalaya that the eyes of the sculptor Mother Durga are formed. The idols of Mother Durga are then finalized. The statue of Mother Durga is of great importance in Durga Puja and adorns the pandals, Durga Puja is celebrated on the Shukla side of Ashwin Month. This year it begins on October 7, while the special puja of Mother Durga will start from October 11 and continue till October 15, Dashami.
