Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from Bhavanipur Mamata Banerjee will launch her campaign for the bypoll from Wednesday. TMC on Sunday declared Banerjee as its candidate for the bypoll to the South Kolkata assembly seat. In West Bengal, the Nandigram seat was lost to its former close ally and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari in the April-May assembly elections, he has to win the by-election to remain in the CM's chair.

With the election commission's announcement, the Bengal Chief Minister, who had left his traditional Bhavanipur seat to contest from Nandigram, has got a chance to become a member of the state assembly and remain the chief minister. Polling for the constituency will be held on September 30 with two seats in Murshidabad district, Samserganj, and Jangipur, where voting could not be held during the eight-phase assembly elections earlier this year. Counting of votes will be held on October 3.

West Bengal Agriculture Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) veteran Sovandeb Chattopadhyay is required to hold a by-election to the Bhavanipur assembly seat after he vacated the constituency in May this year.
