Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for doctors to return to work following protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata. During an administrative review meeting, Banerjee urged medical professionals to resume their duties and dismissed accusations that she offered financial assistance to the victim's family, labeling them as "slander" and part of a conspiracy involving the Centre and left parties.
The Supreme Court has directed that no punitive action be taken against doctors who return to work by 5 pm on Monday, with potential disciplinary measures for those who do not comply. Banerjee addressed this by encouraging doctors to discuss their grievances with the health department, noting that two doctors had already been suspended in response to complaints.
Banerjee also accused the BJP-ruled state of Odisha of targeting migrant workers from Rajasthan and condemned increased crime in West Bengal, attributing it to outsiders. She instructed officials to be vigilant during Durga Puja and requested an extension of the voter ID registration deadline to accommodate festival preparations. The protests were triggered by the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
