Kolkata: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has filed an election petition against Suvendu Adhikari in the Calcutta High Court and the case has been listed for hearing before a single bench on Friday. According to a suit list released by the high court on the website on Thursday, the matter is to be taken up as 'mentioned' through video conference before justice Kaushik Chand's court.
The Election Commission had declared the officer from Nandigram constituency as the winner and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Banerjee as the runner-up. Banerjee had said after the results were announced that the issue would be approached by the court alleging tampering of EVM machines and rejection of the demand for re-counting by the concerned election commission official. BJP MLA officer is currently the leader of opposition in west bengal assembly.
Nandigram Purba is a small town located in Medinipur. In 2007, there was a violent agitation in the region against land acquisition by the Left government for industrial purposes. After which 14 people were killed in police firing and this resulted in a massive revolt against the Marxist government.
