Last year also, the Trinamool Congress government paid homage to Mukherjee on his 65th death anniversary and described him as a great visionary and patriot. Last year, a group of Left fanatics damaged the statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in the crematorium. The state government had installed a bronze statue at the site of the damaged statue and four persons were detained for breaking the statue.

The TMC's performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections was not as expected, the BJP surprised everyone by winning 18 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal. This has created tension in Bengal and Mamata Banerjee's mass base has started to shift.  The assembly elections in Bengal are due in 2021, which has made Mamata trying to woo the people of Bengal.
