Kolkata: The confrontation between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Centre continues on some issue or the other. Now the latest case is about the issuance of tax notices to the Durga Puja Samiti Manch, an apex body of festival organisers in the state. Mamata has targeted the central government for the move.

Puja committees should not be kept under the income tax net. Accusing the BJP of playing politics in the name of Hinduism during the elections, the Chief Minister said that the same people are trying to get Durga Puja done by the organisers after the elections.

Banerjee said that during the elections, the BJP talks about Hinduism and then they are trying to collect income tax from the organisers of Durga Puja. The income tax notice has been allegedly sent to the Durga Puja Committees forum last week. Banerjee said that the festival is a social festival, not a commercial one, while the government also has some social obligations. The Forum of Durga Puja Committees has been asked by the Income Tax Department to file returns at its expenses during the festival. Taking a pinch on Mamata's allegations, the BJP claimed that Mamata fears that money from chit fund companies could come out through these committees led by Trinamool Congress leaders.
