GURUGRAM: A 26-year-old man was booked for selling fake vehicle insurance policies in the name Policybazzar insurance from Delhi's Neb Sarai area, police said on Wednesday.

Accused Rahul Kumar was arrested by cyber crime police station team  of the Gurugram police on Monday. Rahul Kumar had been on the lam since June 2021, when he and a companion conned a Gurugram man out of Rs 51,218 under the guise of renewing his auto insurance. At the Gurugram cyber crime police station (east), a case was registered in this regard.

In 2021, Shashinath Pathak, alias Abhishek Pal, Rajeshwari Singh, and Nihal Singh were taken into custody by the Gurugram police.

"Rahul Kumar admitted to the police that he also operated fake contact centres in Delhi during the years 2020 and 2021. He also employed people for the crime at a rate of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per month. Within two years, the accused gang defrauded 448 persons of more than Rs 42,95,000 by splitting into groups of two each "ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said.The accused's fake insurance coverage was also seized by the police.

"The defendant admitted to the police that he and his other conspirators formerly worked for an insurance business. Together, the criminals devised a scheme to deceive people into buying fake vehicle insurance policies. For this purpose, they collected information about individuals from numerous websites, set up fake bank accounts and mobile phone numbers, and began calling individuals from these numbers to pitch them on buying fake vehicle insurance. We verified it with representatives of the insurance company before capturing the suspect "said Sangwan.

"By posing as a representative or agent of the "Policy Bazaar," they would defraud the policyholder by offering a discount of 25% on the policy premium and transferring the money to their bank account. The accused allegedly utilised the website 'ilovepdf' to create bogus policies. " During the custody, recovery will be made from the accused after in-depth interrogation about other fellow accused," Sangwan said.
