VARANASI: A vendor was detained by the Varanasi Cantonment Police after he allegedly threatened to blow up the location of a civil court and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath event.

On September 30, calls were made to SP Varanasi's (rural) and other police officers' numbers. The culprit, Monu Sonekar, sells momos in Phulwaria area.

To make a threat, Monu had taken a neighbor's daughter's cellphone. He had been detained earlier in 2017 for fabricating his own narrative of being kidnapped.

A. Satish Ganesh, the police commissioner, said: "Following the filing of an FIR against him with the Cantonment police station, Monu was taken into custody. He had a long-standing grudge against the girl's family, whose cellphone he had stolen." An FIR was filed against Monu under sections 504 (intent to provoke breach of peace), 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication), 505(1)b (fanning rumor to produce panic), and 153a (promoting enmity) of the IPC, according to Inspector, Cantt, Prabhu Kant.

Monu had called the homes of the SP, Varanasi, the rural district, and ACP Cantt's CUG number. He threatened to detonate bombs during a celebration that the Chief Minister was scheduled to attend.

The police commissioner said: "The owner of the phone, a girl from the Phulwariya area, and her family members were first held. They admitted upon questioning that they misplaced their phone from their vegetable store on September 30."
