NEW DELHI: Delhi Police had detained a 38-year-old man for harassing women on social media, dating apps, and matrimonial websites while posing as an IPS officer from the 2010 batch assigned to the CBI, an official announced on Monday.

Mayank Kapoor, a resident of Sector 19's Divya Jyoti Apartment, has been named as the accused.

Pranav Tayal, the deputy commissioner of police (Rohini), reports that on October 28, the national cybercrime portal filed a complaint with the cyber police station in Rohini. The complainant claimed to have posted her profile on the matrimonial website Jeevansathi.com, where she met one man named Mayank Kapoor.

"Kapoor misrepresented himself on a matchmaking website as an administrative professional working for the Center Government and listed his income as between Rs. 50 and Rs. 70 lakh annually. The complainant contacted the accused because they seemed like a good fit and they were impressed by their profile ""DCP," he claimed.

"When they first met, Kapoor informed her that he is a Joint Director for the CBI and is also in charge of overseeing the cases involving the ATS Head, the NIA Second-in-Command, and RAW. He had also supplied her a copy of the ID card for a CBI (Special Officer) via WhatsApp to back up his assertions "the official added.

The DCP said, "After gaining the woman's trust, the accused then stole around Rs 1.5 lakh from the complainant at various intervals, claiming that his bank account had been frozen as a result of a Vigilance investigation and he was in need of some money."
"The complainant and her family blocked his mobile number after learning about his reality. Kapoor became enraged over this and threatened her. Even worse, he went over to her society members and showed them their personal images. Additionally, he posted every image of them on Just Dial ""DCP," he said.

A case was filed under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation was started.
"The accused was apprehended during the investigation, and during questioning, he admitted that his wife had accused him of molestation in 2014, leading to their 2017 divorce. Following that, he began considering targeting women on social media, particularly on marriage sites, "the official added.

"He made profiles on a number of dating apps to pursue his goals. He found a match on the dating app Better Half in 2019. He asked a woman for money and identified himself as an IPS officer from the 2010 batch. When the victim learned the truth, she reported him to the Mumbai police station in Mulund. After being granted bail in this case, he did not change his habits and continued to target women using the same tactics "DCP," he said.

The DCP added that the investigation into the case was ongoing and additional victims were being found. "On the analysis of Kapoor's mobile phone, it has been learned that he is also in touch with several girls and introduced himself as a prominent person in the Government of India," he said.
