“Violence against women will not be tolerated”, Maneka Gandhi on Nirbhaya rape case

Whole India appreciating the Supreme Court verdict where the retain with the May 2018’s verdict that says Nirbhaya rape case culprits should be hanged till death. The order came in response to the review petition that was filed by 2012 Delhi rape case culprits where a 23-year-old paramedical student from Delhi raped in a moving bus.

After National Commission of Women chief’s appraisal to the apex court verdict Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development shows her satisfaction on the verdict and further stated government move on such cruelty as: “The determination of the Home Ministry to have a particular cell for heinous crimes such as molestation and rape of women shows that violence against women will not be tolerated.” She further claimed that such reforms taken by the government will be a strong learning for the accused of such crimes.

The cabinet minister also stated an example of Madhya Pradesh where a convict has been awarded capital punishment under the law passed in the state which claimed that a person who found guilty in rape cases of minors will be hanged to death.

Notably, on 12th April amendments in Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was approved by the central government which state death sentence as the punishment for raping minor girls.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi also termed the SC decision as a strong message to the perpetrators of such crimes and said: “The Supreme Court's judgment has raised and restored people's faith in the judiciary. We as a society need to send a very strong message to the culprits and accused in cases of rapes.”

The three-judge bench which includes Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misraas head of the bench, Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi pronounced the dismissal of review petition and upheld the verdict of death sentence to four convicts. Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, and Pawan Gupta were three culprits who filed the petition.
