Bangalore: Amid the ongoing hijab-burqa row in Karnataka, Mangalore University College has withdrawn its decision to allow Muslim girl students to attend class in hijab. However, the college administration has said that the girl students, who are adamant on wearing the hijab, should be helped to get admission in other institutions where there is no uniform or where wearing the hijab is allowed. The college administration was strongly opposed by the students to allowing them to wear hijab in the class.

Against this decision of the college administration, the students sat on a dharna on the campus and protested. The students said that by allowing Muslim girls students to wear hijab in the classroom, the college administration was violating the Karnataka High Court order. In view of the massive protests, the college administration withdrew the decision, saying the Karnataka High Court's order upholding the hijab ban in pre-university colleges will also apply to degree colleges and hence religious attire will not be allowed inside classes.

Professor Subrahmanya Yadadita, VC of the college, said, "Our college had initially allowed girls to wear headscarves matching the colour of the uniform, but in view of the Karnataka High Court order, after a meeting with the chairman of the CDC (College Development Council) and MLA of Mangalore South, Vedvyasa Kamath and members of the syndicate, it has been decided that religious attire will not be allowed inside the classrooms."
