Manik Sarkar, the opposition leader in Tripura, has voiced discontent with the role of Ratan Chakraborty, the current Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, claiming that the opposition's room for criticising the government is "shrinking day by day."

Using Tripura as an example, Manik Sarkar asserted that the Assembly Speakers "always acted generously towards the opposition" during the Left regime. At a condolence meeting for former Assembly Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath, the erstwhile Tripura chief minister addressed. Ex-speaker and MLA from the Jubarajnagar assembly constituency in North Tripura, he died a week ago.

"During his term as Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Debnath always sought to offer equal room to the opposing party," Sarkar added, praising Debnath's efforts as Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. "Members of the Treasury Bench used to have the authority to move new laws and legislations, so the governing party has adequate opportunity to address their issues," Sarkar remarked.

"During his reign, he did honour to the opposition leaders, unlike nowadays when the Speaker pays us less attention," he added. Sarkar said that opposition parties' rights in Tripura are now being 'curbed' in the Assembly. "When the state's guardians changed, Debnath held firm in his beliefs. Debnath protested in the house and occasionally read out loud the parts that were infringed whenever he witnessed the opposition being silenced in violation of state assembly laws," Manik Sarkar said.

On the other hand, CPI-M secretary Jitendra Chowdhury stated, "Our fight is to bring good democracy in the state." We are working to re-establish democratic culture not just inside the assembly, but also in all areas of work. For the change that we all desire, Ramendra Chandra Debnath's path should be followed in letter and spirit."
