New Delhi, Leading human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, popularly known as Manipur's 'Iron Lady', will reportedly end her 16-year long fast on August 9.

And also Sharmila will contest elections in Manipur which will be held in 2017.

Irom Sharmila said, "I will break my fast as the Government has failed to give any positive response, will fight elections to resolve the issues".

She has been on a hunger strike since November 2000, demanding the withdrawal of AFSPA. She has been forcibly nose-fed at a government hospital in Imphal all these years.

Irom began her hunger strike to protest against the death of 10 Manipuris who were shot dead by the Assam Rifles in Imphal.

Sharmila has been arrested, tried, released and arrested again several times on the charge of trying to take her own life.

Though Sharmila says that she loves her life and that she is using fasting as a weapon to secure repeal of AFSPA, 1958, she is charged under section 309 IPC whenever she is arrested.
