Imphal: According to election officials, the state's ruling BJP is leading in nine seats, the Congress in four, and the JC(United) in three, as the counting of votes for Manipur's Assembly elections continues.

The Republican Party of India (Athawale), Naga People's Front, National People's Party, Kuki People's Alliance, and independent candidates were leading one seat apiece, according to the Election Commission's initial trends.

Officials added that counting is continuing in 41 counting rooms across 16 districts in the state, despite rigorous security measures and Covid-19-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  Rajesh Agrawal said, the state's Chief Electoral Officer, three levels of security have been put in place in and around the counting centres and surrounding regions.

According to election officials, around 89.3 percent of the 20,48,169 electorate voted in the two-phase election for the 60-member Manipur Assembly on February 28 and March 5.

This year's voter turnout is greater than in the 2017 and 2012 Assembly elections, when 86.4 percent and 79.5 percent of voters, respectively, exercised their right to vote. The elections were fought by 265 candidates, including 17 women, from several political parties, including the BJP, Congress, NPP, NPF, and Janata Dal (United).
