Manipur: On Sunday, the Manipur government demolished 69 buildings built within the Waithou Protected Reserved Forest in Manipur's Thoubal district.

"As many as 69 houses were fully demolished as the eviction of illegal buildings within the Waithou Protected Reserved Forest region under the Thoubal Forest Division," said Th Lokendro, Thoubal's District Forest Officer. "Illegal buildings in the Waithou Protected Forest and others will be demolished in stages. In the Waithou forest region, over 180 illegal encroachers were found. 71 illegal pattadars were served with show-cause notices, and 69 buildings were evicted, according to the report".

The eviction drive comes three days after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened a joint meeting with officials from the forest and revenue departments, in which he rebuked the officials for overlapping land jurisdiction between forest and revenue departments and illegally allotting land to encroachers.

"In the Thoubal district, unauthorised encroachments on reserve forests are being evicted. The state government has launched a campaign to combat all encroachments in various sections of the state "On Sunday evening, Chief Minister N Biren Singh sent out a tweet.

The eviction was carried out after encroachers failed to provide adequate justification for why they should not be expelled from the forest territory, according to the Thoubal Forest Division. On June 3, the eviction notice was due to be returned.
