Pre-election violence in Manipur continues as the National People's Party (NPP) candidate in Manipur's Andro seat, L. Sanjoy Singh's father Shamjai Singh, was shot by miscreants in February 18th night, just weeks before the Assembly election.

According to sources, the accident happened at about 9:30 p.m., when the victim, Shamjai Singh, was shot in the right shoulder while campaigning in Yaripok Yambeem Leikai by unknown miscreants. Meanwhile, Conrad Sangma, the NPP's leader and Meghalaya's chief minister, has paid a visit to Singh in the hospital.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister posted on his Twitter account, "Our candidate, Sh. L. Sanjoy Singh's father, Sh. Shamjai Singh, was shot and injured during a campaign rally in Yairipok Yambem Leikai, and we are sad. These incidents are tarnishing our democracy's precious nature. I strongly urge ECI to examine the developments in Manipur."

They are taking actions that are simply unacceptable. And we've always believed in using our voices and votes to express ourselves in politics and democracy, but this kind of behaviour, this kind of conduct, is simply wrong, according to Conrad.  Let us tell you that Manipur's elections will take place on February 28 and March 5. On March 10, the votes will be counted.
