NEW DELHI: Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, on Tuesday officially laid the foundation stone  for the construction of three new underpasses at Shalimar Bagh, which would cost Rs 59.5 crore, an official statement said. The underpasses will relieve traffic congestion near Haiderpur Badli Metro and Mukarba Chowk.

According to the statement quoting Sisodia, the first underpass would be erected at Haiderpur Badli Metro near gate number three for walkers, and the second will be built for vehicles travelling between Badli or Outer Ring road and Shalimar Bagh.

Currently, traffic between Mukarba Chowk and Shalimar Bagh has to take a loop if it is headed in the direction of Badli or the Outer Ring Road. Upon completion of the underpass, commuters will enjoy a 1.5 km reduction in distance to travel.

The third will be built for vehicles moving between Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to Azadpur through elevated road which is scheduled to come up in near future, Sisodia said. He said,  this underpass will help reduce traffic at Mukarba Chowk and shorten commute times for workers.

He said,  the three underpasses will all be finished in a year and is expected to reduce commuter traffic around Mukarba Chowk and Haiderpur Badli Metro. It will also save 58,000 litres of fuel yearly and cut carbon emissions by 1.35 lakh kg annually, he said.
