Manoj himself has revealed that he was rejected four times by NSD and then started thinking about committing suicide. However, after being persuaded by his friends, he started acting in nukkad-natak.

He also started doing theatre with nukkad plays. He finally made his actor debut with the one-minute film 'Drohkal' (1994) and then started his Bollywood career with Bandit Queen.
