Indore: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has ordered a ban on diamond mining in the Buxwaha forest. A double bench of Chief Justice RV Malimath and Justice Vijay Shukla on Tuesday, October 26, said mining in the Buxwaha forest could destroy stone age rock paintings, Kalchuri and Chandel period statues, pillars, etc.

A double bench of the high court, hearing the case, issued a stay order that any mining work there would take place only after the next direction of the court. The PIL filed by the Civil Consumer Forum had sought a ban on mining of diamonds in the Buxwaha forest citing the archaeological survey report. Advocate Surendra Verma, who is defending the petitioner, said that between July 10 and 12, the archaeological department had completed the survey work in the Buxwaha forest and submitted its report. Which was produced before the High Court. Based on the same survey, there was a demand from the petitioner to ban mining.

It was stated by the petitioner that the rock painting found in the Buxwaha forest was 25,000 years ago. This stone-age rock painting is a precious heritage that can be destroyed by mining. At the same time, the survey has found several statues and stones of Kalchuri, Chandel period etc. The High Court has also directed the Archaeological Department, The Central and State Governments to submit their replies during the hearing.
