Srinagar: Seventeen former leaders of the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) led by former Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad joined the Congress on Friday (January 6). These include former Deputy CM of Jammu and Kashmir Tara Chand. These leaders have returned back to Congress. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal welcomed the leaders into the party fold. Venugopal said that many of our leaders are coming back before the Bharat Jodo Yatra reaches Jammu and Kashmir. It is a matter of great joy. At the same time, Congress National General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that many more DAP leaders will return back to Congress in the coming days.

Tara Chand, former Pradesh Congress Committee chief Peerzada Mohammad and 15 other leaders have returned to the Congress. Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from Congress in August 2022 and then set up the DAP. Thus, he broke his 52-year-old relationship with Congress. However, a few weeks after the formation of the party, a conflict started in it. Recently, Tara Chand and some other leaders were expelled from DAP. Today, when 17 of the DAP have returned to Congress, it is being considered a major setback for Azad.

Meanwhile, there is speculation that Ghulam Nabi Azad will also return to Congress. However, he is currently denying it. A few days ago, he had said that there was no intention of returning to Congress. Azad had said his return to the old party was suggested by some vested interest leaders in the Congress and there was no truth in it. Azad said, 'I never spoke to any Congress leader nor did anyone call me. That's why I wonder why this type of news is being circulated in the media.'
