Indian share markets declined in line with global stocks with the Nifty dropping to 15707 at day's low. The major concerns that the spread of the Delta variant could dampen global economic recovery weighed on investor sentiment. Broader markets ended mixed, with small-caps closing flat and mid-caps falling nearly 1 percent.

At close, the benchmark BSE Sensex plunged 587 points to end at 52,553 while the Nifty50 ended below the 15,750-mark at 15,730 levels, down 193 points. In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices fell 0.58 percent and 0.31 percent, respectively.

Sectorally, the Nifty Bank index declined over 2 percent, while  Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Private Bank, Nifty Metal and Nifty Auto suffered the most. On the contrary, Nifty Pharma and Realty closed in the green, surging nearly 0.3 percent.

On the Nifty50 index, NTPC, BPCL, Divi's Lab, Nestle India were the top gainers in a weak trading session, while HDFC Bank, HDFC Life, IndusInd Bank, Hindalco, and HDFC led the losses. The market breadth slightly favours declines as the advance-decline ratio rests at 1:1 ratio.
