Market Closing: Sensex falls 207 pts; NSE Nifty closes below 18,250

The Sensex fell 207 points on Wednesday, weighed down by losses in Axis Bank, Reliance Industries, and Bajaj Finance, as global markets weakened. At 61,143.33, the 30-stock index fell 206.93 points, or 0.34 percent. The Nifty fell 57.45 points, or 0.31 percent, to 18,210.95 on the NSE. The Sensex's biggest loser was Axis Bank, which fell more than 6 percent, followed by Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, IndusInd Bank, HUL, and Tata Steel. Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, Infosys, SBI, and UltraTech Cement, on the other hand, were among the gainers.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended with losses. Stock exchanges in Europe were also trading on a negative trajectory in mid-session deals. Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude slumped 1.09 percent to USD 84.72 per barrel.

Trends in Gold: In the international market, gold was trading lower at USD 1,787 per ounce and silver declined marginally to USD  23.94 per ounce.  Gold in the national capital on Wednesday plunged by Rs 244 to Rs 46,747 per 10 gram reflecting the decline in international precious metal prices. In the previous trade, the precious metal had settled at Rs 46,991 per 10 gram. Silver dipped Rs 654 to Rs 63,489 per kilogram from Rs 64,143 per kilogram in the previous trade.
