Market Closing: Sensex falls 257 points, Nifty below 17,900

The Indian benchmark indices ended the Samvat on a negative note on Wednesday, with selling seen in the banking and auto sectors. The Sensex fell 257.14 points, or 0.43 percent, to 59,771.92, while the Nifty50 fell 59.80 points, or 0.33 percent, to 17,829.20. About 1,509 shares rose in value, 1,662 fell in value, and 143 remained unchanged.

The major Nifty gainers included L&T, Grasim Industries, UPL, UltraTech Cement, and Asian Paints. Sun Pharma, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and ICICI Bank were among the losers.

Early deals on the BSE benchmark index saw it reach a high of 60,362, but it eventually fell 257 points to 59,772. The NSE Nifty reached a high of 17,989 before falling to a low of 17,758, eventually settling at 17,829.

On a sector level, the auto and bank indices both fell 1%, while the real estate and capital goods indices both rose 2%. The BSE midcap and smallcap indices both ended the day with slight losses. Muhurat Trading for Diwali: On the festive occasion of Diwali, a special Muhurat Trading session will be held tomorrow (Thursday) from 06:15 pm to 07:15 am.
