Key Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed on a flat note after a volatile trade on the weekend Friday amid a largely negative trend in global stocks. At close,  BSE Sensex ended 21.12 points higher at 52,344.45, while the broader NSE Nifty inched 8.05 points lower to 15,683.35.

Broader markets underperformed the benchmarks as the midcap and smallcap indices closed lower. Among sectors, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services gained, while PSU Bank, metals, auto and IT indices ended in the red.

Hindustan Unilever,  Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv were among major gainers on the Sensex pack of stocks. On the other hand, ONGC was the top loser followed by NTPC, PowerGrid, M&M, Nestle India, SBI and HCL Tech.

Barring FMCG and pharma, all key sectoral indices traded in the red. Metals, PSU banks, and realty indices witnessed steeper contraction.

Oil prices fell for a second consecutive session on Friday as the U.S. dollar rose on the likelihood of interest rate hikes in the US. International oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.73  percent lower at USD 72.55 per barrel.
