Market Closing: Sensex settles 134-pt higher, Nifty above 15,850; IT stocks lead

The benchmark indices continued to rise as demand for IT stocks.  At close, The Sensex ended 134 points higher at 52,904 while the NSE Nifty rose 41 points to settle at 15,854. Broader markets were also in line with the benchmarks with the Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices up 0.4 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.

Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Hcl tech and L&T were among major gainers on the Nifty, while Maruti, Adani ports, Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India, Titan and L&T lost the most. Sectorally,  Nifty Pharma rose 0.3 percent while Nifty Bank recovered from early losses to end flat. Meanwhile, Nifty Auto, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty FMCG witnessed some selling. Banking stocks are under focus ahead of key quarterly reports in June 2021. On July 26, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank will release their first-quarter results, while Kotak Bank will release its earnings report on July 27.

The rupee has lost 12 paise to 74.61 against the US dollar in currency markets, as investor sentiment has been pulled down by a strong US dollar and weak domestic equities.
