Market Closing: Sensex surges 488 pts Nifty ends near 17,800

Equity benchmark BSE Sensex rallied 488 points on Thursday, tracking gains in Titan, Tata Consultancy Services and ICICI Bank amid a positive trend in global equities. At close,  BSE index ended 488.10 points or 0.82  percent higher at 59,677.83. Similarly, the NSE Nifty rose 144.35 points or 0.82  percent to 17,790.35.

Titan company was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, climbing over 10  percent, followed by Mahindra and Mahindra Maruti, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, HCL, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra and ICICI Bank. On the other hand, Dr Reddy’s, HDFC, Bajaj Finserv, Nestle India and Hindustan Uni Lever were among the laggards. The IT Index lent good support ahead of earnings starting on Friday.

Elsewhere in Asia, Stock Exchanges in Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo ended with significant gains. Shanghai was closed for holidays. Stock exchanges in Europe were also trading on a positive note in mid-session deals.

Gold:  In the international market, gold traded in the green at USD 1,766 per ounce and silver flat at USD 22.74 per ounce. Gold prices traded firm with spot gold prices at COMEX trading up at USD 1,766 per ounce on October 7, Analysts said, Gold prices seen recovery with fall in the dollar index and weaker U.S. bond yields.
