Markets witnessed a monotonous day of trade with the benchmark index Nifty trading in a narrow range throughout the day as option writers took centre stage. Nifty Bank was down 0.2 percent, while the broader markets were trading strongly with gains of 0.5 percent on the Nifty Midcap 100 index.

On closing, BSE Sensex gained 5 points to 47751.33, while the NSE Nifty was unchanged at 13981.75. Among top gainers on the last trading session of 2020 were HDFC, Hindalco, Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank and Divis Labs, while losers include Shree Cements, Bharti Airtel, TCS, Ultratech and Tech Mahindra.

Midcap 100 index closed higher, up 0.5 percent. Market breadth ended in the favour of the advances Nifty index added fresh long positions during the day.

Elsewhere, European indices lost ground on the last trading day of the year because of profit booking and as the news focussed that the US has raised tariffs on some EU products and on account of wider lockdown in Britain. London's FTSE currently traded weak by 1.69 percent. Also, US stock futures point to a flat to a negative opening in the US markets.
