Markets rise for third day amid strong global trends

MARKET CLOSING UPDATES:  Benchmark indices of stocks went up for the third day in a row on October 18, amid strong global market trends and buying in index major Reliance Industries.

The BSE Sensex, which tracks 30 stocks, went up 549.62 points, or 0.94 percent, to finish at 58,960.60. It jumped 732.68 points, or 1.25 percent, to 59,143.66 during the day.

The broader NSE Nifty also went up by 175.15 points, or 1.01 percent , to finish at 17,486.95.

State Bank of India (SBI) was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, followed by ITC, Nestle, Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro.

The ones that were last were HDFC, NTPC, HDFC Bank, Tech Mahindra, and Sun Pharma.

The Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices gained 1.2 percent  and 0.7 percent , respectively, in the broader markets. Overall, there were twice as many buyers as there were sellers on the market. The India volatility index, on the other hand, went down by more than 5 percent .

Shares of public sector undertaking (PSU) banks were going up for the third day in a row, and the Nifty PSU Bank index on the National Stock Exchange had risen 7 percent  in the last two days (NSE).

International Markets: Asian markets in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong closed with gains, while Shanghai settled lower. In the middle of the trading session, Europe's stock markets were making profits. Wall Street had ended significantly higher on Monday.

At USD 91.02 per barrel, Brent crude, which is used as the international standard for oil, was down 0.65 percent .

According to data from the exchange, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were still net sellers on the Indian capital market on Monday. They sold shares worth 372.03 crore.
