Markets: Sensex gains 642 points, Nifty Tops 14744 Levels

Indian share markets closed higher with BSE Sensex ending 641 points higher at 49,858 while the NSE Nifty 50 index rose 186 points to end at 14,744

NTPC, HUL, Power Grid, Tata Steel and UPL were among the top gainers in trade today, while top laggards included Larsen, Bajaj Auto, Tech Mahindra, Coal India and Bajaj Finserv.

On weekly basis, However, today's gains were not enough to prevent the benchmark indices to post losses for the week. Both Sensex and Nifty ended with losses of 2 percent for the week.

Among the sectoral indices, the recovery was heard by FMCG and Metal stocks. The Nifty FMCG index rose 2.4 percent while the Metal index gained 2.1 percent at the end of trade. The PSU Bank index rose 1.5 percent while the Pharma index gained 1.3 percent.

Buying was visible across the sectors as all the 11 sector gauges, barring the index of realty shares, ended higher led by the Nifty FMCG index's 2.5  percent gain. Nifty IT, Pharma, Metal, Private Bank, PSU Bank and Nifty Bank indexes also rose over a  percent each.

Broader markets ended higher but the Smallcap indices underperformed. The Nifty Midcap index ended 1.2 percent higher while the Smallcap index underperformed to end with gains of 0.7 percent. 1,011 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 868 stocks posted losses.
