Indian share markets have opened with a positive note, extending their gains for the fifth consecutive day. The S&P BSE Sensex opened 281 points higher at 47,634 while the NSE Nifty 50 index stood above the mark of 13,950, up 79 points at 13,952.
Broader markets are outperforming in the early minutes of the trading session. The Midcap index is up 0.5 percent while the Smallcap index gained 0.6 percent.
Current top gainers in the Nifty include IndusInd Bank, HCL Tech, Divis Lab, Grasim and Axis bank while laggards have been Nestle, JSW Steel, L&T, PowerGrid and Eicher Motors..
Among the sectoral indices, the Metal index has opened with gains of 1 percent while the PSU Bank index is up 0.8 percent. Other indices like the Nifty Bank and Nifty Media gained over 0.5 percent each while the Auto and FMCG indices are up 0.4 percent at the start of trade.
Wipro shares were 0.5 percent up as the company has opened its buyback offer today which will close on January 11, 2021. In November, shareholders had approved the buyback scheme for the purchase of up to 23.75 crore equity shares at Rs 400 per share.
