The U.S. space agency National Aeronautics and Space (NASA) has reported the hack of its server. A report published this week by NASA's Inspector General's Office (OIG) revealed that in April 2018, hackers unauthorizedly entered the agency and stolen data related to the Mars mission. The report says hackers have stolen about 500MB of data. The report said the hackers intercepted NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) network through a small device (Raspberry Pi). This is extremely tragic for NASA in terms of safety.

According to a recent 49-page report, the hacker used a shared network gateway to access the JPL network, followed by the network where information about the Mars mission was present. The report says the cyber out has also sought the help of an external system to break into the JPL network. The main task of NASA's JPL department is to monitor satellites and various satellites orbiting planets in the solar system. In addition, JPL also manages NASA's DSN or Deep Space Network. The Deep Space Network is a worldwide satellite dish network used to send and receive signals from NASA spacecraft.

For your information, investigators in the case have said that in addition to reaching JPL's mission network, the hackers also reached JPL's DSN IT network in April 2018. The hacker has also disconnected many more networks connected to JPL and DSN. There is also a fear that the hacks may not dent the main server. In December of 2018, the U.S. Justice Department accused two Chinese nationals of being cloud providers, NASA and the U.S. Navy for hacked. The department said the two citizens were involved in the Chinese government's hacking unit APT10. It is also said that the APT10 team could be involved in the April 2018 hacking. NASA reported another hacking in December 2018 that took place in October 2018. The personal information of NASA employees was stolen in the hacking.
