NEW DELHI: Mary Kom's selection in the World Championship team has sparked controversy. Former junior world champion Nikhat Zarin, who has written to the Indian Boxing Federation through a letter against Vanlal Duati, alleged that he was "prevented from participating" in a trial bout on Tuesday and was done by chief selector Rajesh Bhandari. He wrote in his letter that all this was very disappointing and he was shocked.

Former World Youth Championship silver medalist and Asian bronze medalist Nikhat wrote, "It is a matter of great surprise and disappointment that the selection committee chairman Rajesh Bhandari informed me before the match started that there would be no bout today and there were some internal discussions to ensure that the bout would not take place today. I am being kept for the future and I will not be brought down at such a young age.

Six-time world champions MC Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain have been selected for the upcoming Women's World Boxing Championship on the basis of their recent performances. The 36-year-old Mary Kom has won two gold medals in this year's India Open and the recently held tournament in Indonesia, selected in the 51 kg category. World and Asian bronze medallist Lavlina will take part in the 69 kg category. Nikhat had recently won a silver medal in the Thailand tournament and was hoping to challenge Mary Kom in the 51kg trial.
