On Early Sunday, a large earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck the Amazon jungle in north-central Peru, the U.S. Geological survey reported. The quake, at a moderate depth of 114 kilometres (71 miles) struck at 2:41 a.m., 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of the village of Lagunas and 158 kilometres (98 miles) east-northeast of the larger town of Yurimaguas. Earthquakes that are closer to the surface generally cause more destruction, AP reported.

As per the local media reports, people felt the tremors from Bogotá to Ica to Cuenca. The Peruvian government’s emergency department tweeted that it registered a magnitude of 8.0 and that the quake was felt in the city of Callao, and the capital, Lima.

In Yurimaguas, a number of old houses collapsed, and the electricity was cut, according to the National Emergency Operations Center, which gave the magnitude of the quake as 7.2.

The earthquake was felt in northern and central Peru, including the capital Lima. "Based on all available data... there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth," the US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
