Surge in US Google searches for 'how to move to Scotland' after Trump win: Following Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, there has been a notable rise in U.S.-based Google searches related to relocating to Scotland, as well as issues like abortion rights and LGBTQ+ laws in the country. Americans are increasingly curious about Scottish citizenship, along with their stance on abortion and transgender rights, according to Google search data. This surge in searches highlights a growing desire among some Americans to move abroad in reaction to Trump's return to the White House.
Approximately 76% of these relocation-related searches came from within the U.S., particularly from states such as Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Tennessee, and Minnesota. Other popular destinations included New Zealand, Ireland, and Canada, all of which are known for having relatively simple immigration processes for U.S. citizens.
The searches indicate concerns among some Americans about the potential impact of Trump's policies on social issues, especially on abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. Terms like "Scottish citizenship," "is abortion legal in Scotland," and "Scotland trans rights" saw a significant increase in interest. These rising concerns reflect the unease many feel about possible changes to domestic policies in the U.S. under Trump's administration.
Patrick Harvie, co-leader of the Scottish Greens, responded to these concerns by emphasizing Scotland’s welcoming stance. He said, "Donald Trump is a convicted felon and political extremist who has shown a complete lack of respect for human rights, democracy, or our climate. It is no surprise that people would want to get as far away as possible from his destructive rhetoric and the racist politics that he represents. We believe in a Scotland that is open and welcome to all, a country that removes barriers rather than building walls."
Trump's victory was solidified after securing a win in Wisconsin, bringing him over the 270 electoral votes needed to claim the presidency. His success in key battleground states like Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan, and North Carolina was crucial to his path to the White House.
Following the election results, Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly called Trump to concede and offer her congratulations. President Joe Biden also invited Trump to meet in the Oval Office to discuss the transition, marking a pivotal moment in U.S. political history.
