The path currently used for darshan of Goddess Vaishno Devi is not a natural route to enter the cave. The artificial road was constructed in 1977, in view of the increasing number of devotees. Presently, devotees enter the temple of the Goddess through this route. Few devotees get the privilege of entering the Goddess Bhavan from the ancient cave. Actually it is a rule that whenever there are less than 10 thousand devotees, only then the door of the ancient cave can be opened. Usually, this happens during the winter months in December and January. The length of the sacred cave is 98 feet. The cave has 2 artificial avenues for entry and exit. A large platform is also built in this cave. On this platform is the seat of the Goddess, where Goddess Trikuta resides. The ancient cave is of great importance in the temple of Goddess Vaishno Devi. Devotees desire to see the Goddess from this cave, because according to the belief, Bhairav Baba's body is present in front of the ancient cave. Goddess had killed Bhairav Baba with her trident here and flew his head into Bhairav valley and the body is left here.

The ancient cave is also important because the holy Ganges water flows in it. Devotees get sanctified by this water and reach the court of the Goddess, which is a wonderful experience. Vaishno Devi's cave is also related to a halt on the Yatra route which is called Adi virgin or Ardhkunwari. There is another cave here which is known as Garbhajoon. It is believed that the Goddess lived here for 9 months in the same way that an infant stays in the Goddess's womb for 9 months. Therefore this cave is called Garbhajoon. Along with this information of Adi Kunvari or Ardhkunvari, there is a belief that a person does not have to go to the cave again.
