Today, 6 May 2023, is the  162nd birthday of the country's freedom fighter Motilal Nehru. Motilal Nehru was born on 6 May 1861 in a Kashmiri Brahmin family in Delhi. 

Motilal Nehru  was elected Congress President, founded the Swaraj Party, Leader of the Opposition in the Central Legislative Assembly, drafted a constitution for India and Motilal Nehru was a prominent freedom fighter in the freedom struggle. He was one of the most intelligent lawyers in the country. He played an important role in the Congress and was also elected Congress President twice and is known as the father of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. He was respectfully called Pandit Motilal Nehru.

His father was Gangadhar and mother Jivrani. Motilal Nehru's father died before Motilal was born. Motilal Nehru was one of the first young generation in India to receive 'Western style' college education. He joined Muir College, Agra but failed to appear in the final year examination of BA. He decided to join the legal profession and appeared for the law examination. Motilal Nehru secured first position in the law examination and started his career as a lawyer in Kanpur in 1883.

Later Motilal Nehru settled in Allahabad and made his mark as one of the best lawyers of the country. In 1909, he reached the pinnacle of his legal profession by being approved to become a lawyer in the Privy Council of Great Britain. In 1910, Motilal contested the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces and won. Hurt by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he decided to enter the freedom struggle. He gave up his luxurious lifestyle, western clothes and other things and started wearing Khadi. Motilal Nehru was arrested in 1930 in the wake of the Civil Disobedience Movement. Seeing his deteriorating health, he was released in 1931. Motilal Nehru died on 6 February 1931 in Lucknow.
