Mayawati calls Centre ‘political stunt to 10% reservation for upper castes but welcomes the decision

New Delhi:  Union Cabinet on Monday approved a landmark proposal to provide 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections in the General category in government jobs and education. A day after this decision Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati on Tuesday told her party welcomed the move. She, however, termed this decision as a “political stunt” of Modi government.

The BSP party has decided to support the bill but termed it as the political move of PM Narendra Modi lead government. Beside BSP,  Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress, targeted the Modi government over the move. While the Congress called it an election gimmick, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee questioned if the move initiated by the government was constitutional or not.

Constitutional amendment Bill is  tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. The proposed quota will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation that has been granted to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes.

To pass the amendment, the government needs the support of minimum two-thirds members of both Houses of Parliament. Talking about Loksabha, The ruling NDA government has needed numbers in the Lok Sabhabut it will require additional support from the Opposition to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha.
