TIRUPUR: MDMK presidium chairman S. Duraisamy quit the party, culminating a face-off with the leadership over the prominence of Durai Vaiko, son of party leader Vaiko, in the party.

Duraisamy told reporters in Tirupur, "I am resigning primary membership and relinquishing other responsibilities in the party. He also asserted that there was no longer a reason to support the MDMK, noting that DMK membership was a requirement for MDMK candidates to run in the 2019 parliamentary election and the 2021 assembly election. They were marked with the "rising sun" emblem of the DMK.

Duraisamy, who had dared the party leadership to punish him for supporting a union of the MDMK and DMK, declared he would leave politics but not the public eye. As the lone surviving Dravidian politician who was a member of the DMK during its founding by Anna in 1949,  Duraisamy said, "I will continue to propagate the ideals of Anna (Annadurai) and Periyar (E.V. Ramasamy)," saying they were both instrumental in the formation of the DMK. I requested in a letter to Chennai's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin that the home where Anna lived in Nungambakkam be turned into a memorial.
The senior leader's decision to leave the party follows the venom that local party members who support Mr. Durai Vaiko have directed at  Duraisamy.
